Question: can you file a patent for something that’s existed for a long time? I guess the question is of implementation. While self-winding watches and shake-to-charge flashlights already harvest kinetic energy to store and later discharge, I suppose they do it in a different way than this proposed system from Nokia. Not sure I trust something sliding back and forth in my phone, either. And wouldn’t that necessitate a bunch of empty space that could be taken up with, I don’t know, a bigger battery?
Well, I shouldn’t carp at a perfectly practical idea. How often have you been stuck somewhere with a low battery, and no outlet in sight? Shake your phone a few hundred times and you’ve gained… a couple minutes of power. And a lot of weird stares.

miss piggy who?
I hope the battery will not be biggy… and the idea is old but with a new usage.. it would be great implementation.
It would be good as a backup power source instead of a primary.
Yeah that’s what o was thinking. Charge it normally but have the shaking battery as an emergency back-up.
I like it.
I concur, actually this one has been preview on the debut of the n900 last year.
I bet charging is going to be like the Nintendo Wii fail..

tnx!
a year ago in business school we were asking to come up with a new, complete product, and this was exactly what we’ve envisioned.
“And a lot of weird stares”, I liked this phrase for sure. Nokia is going get itself in a very uncomfortable position with this patent as it is much more stupid than it looks.
Suck ur ASS
Thanks for sharing nice infcormation
aga, tnx!
“No, I’m not playing Wii Butterchurn! I’m charging my Nokia!”
As long as you dont have to shake the thing for like 10 minutes for only 30 minutes of battery life, it sounds like a great idea. All depends on how much effort is needed, people don’t want to spend all day looking like fools.
