XNA 4.0 games on Windows Phone 7 Series look awesome (but won’t be for Zune HD)

A bundle of screenshots just hit the net showing off the latest Direct3D-based mobile games running on a WinPho7 device, and they look pretty hot. We knew that the Tegra chipset in the Zune HD and likely in several upcoming WinPho handsets (Tegra 2, to be precise) is capable of some nice 3D, but these are better than anything I’ve seen yet. The game shown is The Harvest, a dungeon crawler which, if indicative of the general quality of WinPho7 games, portends good times to be had.

In slightly less-enthralling news, it seems that the Zune HD will be sticking with XNA 3.1. Hmm. So basically the Zune HD is being abandoned as far as game development — bad news for Zune owners, since it means less value for their device and suggests an upcoming Zune HD 2 or Super HD or HDX or whatever name they come up with. Zune HD 7 Series?

  • It is Microsoft, I’m sure they think something like Zune Windows Phone Series Xbox Live Edition sounds like a catchy title :-)

  • the games look really good.

They also demoe another game Battle Punks, its a one-on-one fighting game by Gravity Bear ( its also available on Facebook )

  • This game looks kick ass! Me want now!!

  • I just dont get it how MS and others first screw you with a product (Original Zune), then create a follow up product (Zune HD) that’s supposedly better and beg consumers to support it, and now we here that an upcoming product is on the radar and that the Zune HD may bite the dust support wise. As much as I hate too, but give Apple some credit for atleast supporting a product for lengthy amount of time (see iPhone 2g & iTouch 1g). One should be able to make a purchase and atleast rest assured that while new or enhanced generations will certainly come down the pipe, your purchase will continue to receive updates and enhancements that are similar to future gens.

    • Yeah I got burned by buying a Zune HD also. The Zune HD is truly capable of running these games. I got tired of waiting for MS to support their things. They left SO much money on the table! How hard would it be to make a program to sync with Mac users. I’m looking for a reason to leave the Ipod. I have since gave the Zune HD to sister in law and bought a Ipod touch. And you MS, no, you will not receive any more money from me no matter how sexy the next Zune HD is.

      • The Zune was a proof-of-concept for a new UI direction that just happened to double as a phenomenal PMP. MS knows the real $ lies in WM7 and is acting accordingly. The developers need a critical mass to entice development, and sadly, while WM7 will provide that, Zune HD doesn’t. Don’t count out some devs porting WM7 games to Zune HD, regardless of official support. The similarities in the platform are too blatant too ignore.

P.S. I’m still rockin’ a Zune 80 GB 2nd Gen, so quit feeling sorry for yourselves.

        • actually the zune hd has the same life cycle as the iphone does 1 year. I personally don’t think that’s too bad i suppose you now feel exactly like everyone else who bought a iphone 1g and was hooked on to the contract only to see the next gen iphone come out later with better features. The way i see it zune hd was sooo cheap comparatively it was worth it just to get a sneak peak at what was coming.

  • What a f*%#”k, why MS will kill the Zune HD it’s a good device to go fight against another PMP’s, that so sad, I have a lot of hope on it, that why I bought it, damm it’s stupid…

    • Because the market for PMPs is dying. iPod sales are down, Zune sales have always been slow, everyone is seeing sales of PMPs dry up as people expect that functionality from their phone. The dirty little secret is that outside of a well-heeled fashionable crowd, people have been using their phones as media players for years.

    • They are not killing the Zune HD. Just speculation. And there will most likely be porting the WM& apps to Zune HD

  • heres a reason to get the zune hd . . . its THE best PMP out there for music and video. Hands down, and the marketplace/social is waaaaaaaay ahead of iTunes.

You want a gaming device, you want an app store, etc then get an iSomething or an Archos, or a netbook, or a tablet.

  • This is fantastic! MS is really moving forward! Mobile phones are really starting to replace some other devices, but with the battery life batteries have these days, if you use your phone for all that it offers it won’t really get you through the day!

  • Microsoft really does suck, the zune hd is an incredible product, but they pull out way to early to please everyone. I always like to keep my phone basic and separate from the rest of my devices because the battery life is not that good, plus if you used most phones for serious gaming, then that is a lot of wear and tear on a very expensive piece of equipment if you are not up for a replacement. My zune hd is a great pmp, but really a disappointment and I hate to say it I should of brought an ipod touch or even a psp go.
