No copy-paste for Windows Phone 7 Series

Le sigh.

We actually already knew there was no copy/paste functionality in WP7S devices, but the announcement we were hoping for at MIX wasn’t “no copy/paste for real” but rather “here’s how we’ve obsoleted copy/paste.” Maybe they’ll add it later, but… really, now. Nothing at all? You guys are killing the dream.

  • Welcome to our world, fanboys. :P

  • hahaha…. iphone 1.0

  • yea. seriously, i was really thinking of getting WP7S to replace my iPhone. BUt no copy/paste? What were they thinking? And they’re even proud to tell it to people, like it was design decisions and whatnot. I really hope they implement it before the launch…. sigh.

  • wow..that’s a bummer. so far i have been radically impressed with WP7. so it will allow watching instant netflix but lack copy/paste functionality. seriously, there’s gotta be more to this missing feature with all the thought that ms has put into the rest of the platform. and i can’t imagine ms didn’t include the iphone copy/paste fiasco in its own market research for WP7. while ms may be slow and unimaginative at times; they are nothing but immensely intelligent and thorough.

  • i can feel the comments by Windows Mobile users coming back to bite us in the arse on Windows Phone 7.

    • I don’t know, every Windows Mobile user I know (admittedly not many) wrote off Windows Phone 7 Series the second they heard it would not be backward compatible, since the only thing holding them to that wretched pile of a mobile OS was some old apps that aren’t available for any other phone.

I don’t think you are going to find many of the old users defending the new OS.

  • Fucking what the fuck?

  • That is pretty bad that they aren’t adding cut and paste. I bet they will after a bunch of people complain. What are they thinking? Did Apple say they won’t sue Microsoft if they don’t add multitasking and copy and paste in the new OS?

I’m still looking forward to playing with one. Not sure if I’ll buy one now, but we’ll see. If it has enough positives I may still buy one. I do love the unique interface.

And I was hoping the copy and paste would be like Surface. Highlight word, hold finger on it, a circle appears that has copy, cut, paste. You pick copy…or cut…go to where you want to paste, hold your finger their, and a circle appears again and you pick paste. That would have been awesome!

  • this fills me with indescribable joy. no multi-tasking, no cut/copy & paste, apps only through corporate marketplace. hmmmm.

    wah-wahhhhhhh.

  • Yet another WTF for their design team. Add to that no multi-tasking and marketplace-only app install and you have….Windows Mobile 6.

It’s kinda like watching the ‘evolution’ of IE. At least I’ll be they’ll have a snazzy box to sell it in.

  • I did not really miss it on iPhone 1.x and I used it once or twice since it’s available. Sure it’s nice to have when you need it, but..

I’m wondering if this is really a feature everybody is totally crazy about, or just something that get’s a lot of attention among nerds – like MMS or Fax or centronincs ports? Something tells me that only few people outside the blogosphere actually care about c&p on a smartphone, and companies can safley postpone solving this later.

  • the iphone is too influential… no one can resist and live… they either bend and follow in the footsteps of the iphone or they die out

(plus… im still looking for a worthy iphone contender)

if only i could smash android + iphone + verizon into one phone, it would be awesome…

  • They’re copying the iPhone’s success… verbatim:

    - no Copy/Paste
    - no multitasking
    - no memory cards
    - closed OS
    - apps only available via official store

Hey, it worked for Apple right… right?!?

  • Any thoughts on whether, Microsoft is gonna make the Windows Mobile 7 (Developer Phone) available online to shop “developers only”?

    - Pretty much similar to what Google did? with thier Dev phone?

    Cheers’

  • I’m kind of excited again. Copy and paste and multitasking is coming later on. They want to bring it out on time so they’ll have to postpone some things which is ok as long as they don’t take to long to put them in. I may wait till I make up my mind on weather I get a Windows Phone 7 phone.

Another thing I’m interested in is the forward upgradeability. I mean from version 7 to 7.1 and on will Windows Phone 7 users be able to upgrade? This will be another big factor that people will want to know about. With phones like Android which lets you upgrade…in time…to the Pre which so far all phones are upgraded, to the Blackberry, and iphone which also get upgrades to higher versions this will be on peoples minds when its time to buy.

  • Well, That is a bad new to say the least… they aren’t adding cut and paste. I bet they will after one millions complanins from their users. What are they thinking? If I am not mistaked Apple did the same with its iPhone…

  • Microsoft just mentioned in a Q&A session here at MIX10 in no uncertain terms that clipboard operations won’t be supported on Windows Phone 7 Series… so that’s that. Kind of ironic considering that the WinMo of old has been enjoying the functionality since time immemorial, isn’t it? Of course, anything is possible going forward — they’ve said on several occasions in different talks and sessions this week that they’re already looking at a number of enhancements that were scoped out of the initial release of the platform
