So in 2008, a company called Integra Communications filed for a “Nexus” trademark having something to do with voice and data telecommunications. Along comes Google a year later and files for “Nexus One.” Trademark office says no go. I’m not really surprised at this; it’s not really their job to determine which is the better or more popular product, but rather whether it is possible for the two trademarks to be mistaken for one another. Oh god! Will you have to scribble out the name of your phone now and write something else?
Nah. I mean, Cisco had a legitimate product out there called the iPhone for years, which was actually in use and still being sold when Apple dropped the iBombshell. They buried the hatchet, probably for an undisclosed sum, but nominally so they could “explore interoperability.” Whatever that means. So I think it likely that Google will call up Integra, say “name the next one something else and there’s a hundred thou in it for you” and in the meantime they’ll just leave the ™ off the Nexus One name.

I dont think its a big problem for Google. As you said, they will settle this issue so that we won’t even notice. And btw, there is nothing to “scribble out” on the Nexus One. ( If i am getting you right…)
Ironically, the nexus one trademark was coined from the movie, blade runner, in which the co-writer of the movie had tried to sue google for that.
The Guy Who Chose The Name!!!
Should companies steal the Google name now? wtf is wrong with Google. First stealing the android name and now Nexus One. Google should be listed as either dumb/dumber or axis of evil.
It’s only a non-final action vs a final action. No final determination has been made. There appear to be other “Nexus” marks in the telecommunications space so Google might have some arguments.
Google can handle this problem very well this a small problem for google.
that’s free promotion for their mobile service…. not even a problem …
that name is sooooooooo lame anyway
why didn’t they just name it “Google One” or “gPhone” ?
Perhaps Google wants to create something new to call the Google Phone? *fingers crossed*
or why dont you just get an iPhone?? i think nexus one is a great name…
Particularly when you palindromize it:
Nexus one no suxen
Thats beautiful!
Or they could have name it gSpot… get it! G-spot… It’s because Google is trying to find something talked about but that doesn’t really exist. A phone os that can match up to Apple’s! I kill myself :D
Um… you are aware that this Apple’s phone OS still does not multi task right? And it is completely uncustomizable… iphone’s not even really a smartphone, more like a featurephone that can run restricted apps.
cough – 133,979 restricted apps – cough.
I love it “featurephone”. Save my day.
And yes… 150000 silly, dumb and useless apps (books, feeds, farts, urls, … as apps). There are maybe <800 real apps. The rest is a real joke. What system uses apps when there are the real websites? Android got one million apps (and more if we count all the content in the net, think only of all the free ebooks!)
So whats the point of this "I got more (shit) apps than youuu"? The whole system counts not fancy unreal dressing.
The thing about the iPhone and apps is every website that want to make available some dynamic content on their mobile website can’t use flash because Steve decided that the iPhone and iPad won’t be using it. Instead they create apps to access their web content in a more dynamic way than old plain html.
Nexus (control center) > iPhone (gimmicky name created by adding an i to the word phone)
You’d have to be an idiot to think that a name like gphone would be better. That’d be like imitating an idiot(Apple).
one company called “Bright Telecom” already has a phone by the name gFone
They should call it: GMobile
That’s the best name
great name.. lousy product.. I mean, if we’re going by the slowing sales..
Where is my HTC desire?
should have just called it backrub and make it vibrate evertime you touch it
Google can always get a ‘fair’ deal on things like this, I mean, I don’t know much about Integra Comm, but I don’t think Google will ever change his product name, while it’s easier make others do that instead.
I hope the author knows the difference between trademark and registered trademark. If they can use the name Nexus, then they can use it with or without TM. If the registration is successful, you move from TM to ®.
All you Aplle lovers go back to the Stiven Job’s closet and don’t come back. You have you’re iphones and this is not something that should intrest you so leave us normal people with this crap out of phone that run’s crapy OS that google makes, we’re happy with it and are not jellous on iphone….
At least my iPhone has spellcheck.
That’s good…every third grader needs spellcheck

At least my iPhone has spellcheck.
RFLMAO. What ever happened to grammar check?
Wow this is beyond spell check. We need to do a DNA test to insure that you are human.
Aplle, Stiven, intrest, you’re (no we aren’t. How about your.)
Crammer – “and are not jellous on iphone”
“So leave us normal people with this crap out of phone that run’s crapy OS that google makes”
Have a little more green Jello. In Ohio they call it salad.
Scary, how many heads do your children have?
I suspect you live in Georgia.
Good luck.
Um, the word is “ensure”, not “insure”. A DNA test does not give anyone human insurance. Thanks for playing, though.
I want to know how Google got away with Buzz when Yahoo is already using the “Buzz” word in their social media approach.
jonathan… If you were going by sales numbers, Droid has outsold apple’s crap phone in the same 74 day-to-day period. Google’s 1.05 million, and apple’s 1 million. (It took 74 days for apple to sell 1million, it took google less than 74 days, and on the 74th day they obviously beat apple.) Please know what you’re talkin about before you say anything. Apple is a horrible company that overcharges for less than premium technology. i.e. ipad… costs ~$230 to make, sells for ~$900…. = rip off? It isnt even that special, HP been selling tablets for years… and the hardware stats for apple’s tablet are definitely below market-par.
Yes, and think of apps with 320×480 resolution on a 10″ screen. I wet my pants. Pardon, I mean I use my FartApp.
So we are waiting for all the cool nativ iPad apps. So then you can open a twitter window beside a ebay client and hearing webradio all on one big screen.
…except you can’t multitask with the iPad…
I’m not arguing with anything, except that the iPad does NOT cost just $230 to make. Those numbers are the cost of the parts only and doesn’t include the cost of shipping the parts, assembling the parts, providing customer service, distribution, licensing, patents, legal fees, and most of all: research (building the sucker).
I agree with your statement and I must add that people can’t compare a single Android enabled phone with the iPhone. That’s because Apple has created some sort of rarity around the iPhone by limiting the OS to their own devices compared to Google or even Microsoft. Moreover when we talk about iPhone we don’t differentiate each generation of IPhone so why should we differentiate the Droid from the Nexus One or other HTC phones (Desire, Hero, etc.)
Disclaimer: English is not my first language so I welcome any correction from your part but please don’t associate mistakes with a lack of effort from my part.
Ours got published for opposition, and I applied for it myself.

It goes to show that all the lawyering in the world can not make up for Google style due diligence.
So many professionals including lawyers do due diligence using Google, and they end up paying for it. Google is the poor man’s research tool being misused by the super wealthy as a cop out.
I highly doubt that google will have any issues in regards to the name of their sick phone.
Quick question, why does every post on the net about any cell phone have Apple fanboys swarming in to start a flame war? Go talk fanboy on the apple fanboy forums about being the ultimate fanboy. We are all tired of hearing about your phone and the shitty network it rode in on. Enjoy paying almost $100 more a month, than anyone else, except for those poor bastards on verizon, you guys are in the same price boat.
Apologies for any bad grammar, it’s late and I have to charge my N1.
Nexus One is a play on Android. The androids or replicants from Blade Runner are Nexus-6 models, which are visually indistinguishable from actual human beings but have superior strength (and a limited 4 year lifespan). Can’t believe that nobody in this comment thread has caught this. Maybe Ridley Scott or Philip K. Dick should sue Google for royalties?
Wait. They are:

You guys are all phone fags. Why don’t you go home and fondle your phones you fanboy losers. The nexus one and iphone both have their positives and negatives. If you have your blinders on then you are just a fucking asshole. Go fuck your phone! BITCHES….!
it seems cisco comes up with all the good names before others – they have announced nexus line of products in jan 2008
That reminds me of the “Glam” trademark in france http://www.glam.fr
Klause has it right. If they don’t get the trademark it
may just deny them exclusive use.
I like how a Philippines paint company has registered http://www.nexusone.com
