Palm now worth nothing

Woof. Analysts have placed a sell rating on Palm and are now valuing their stock, at least in hyperbolic terms, at $0. Quoth CNN:

Shares of Palm (PALM) plunged 19% to $4.59 a share early Friday, a new 52-week low. Investors are becoming increasingly pessimistic about the company’s future and several analysts downgraded their positions on the stock to “sell.” Two analysts even lowered their price targets to $0.

Josh Topolsky has some advice for a turnaround but I don’t think even that sprightly elf-man can help this company in distress. The dream, as they say, is dead.

  • Is RIM the most popular now?

  • I just spend 2 days or so trying to get my boss’s Centrino to sync with Outlook. If you do that, you’ll easily understand why Palm is worth $0.

  • “Palm now worth nothing” is a rather bold title, and is factually incorrect. They are stated to have a projected worth of $0 by a single analyst. Which is a totally different thing than right now being worth nothing. Good attempt to get additional site traffic by making a bold claim. I just had to come here to tell you you’re a dumb***. Be more factual next time. That’s what good faux journalists do.

    • Well stated. Also, elf-man? Frankly, that isn’t nice.

    • In this case, I think they’re right. Please, do tell me why Palm is worth something. Describe for me in English how a company that is going to have to pay off its debt in just a few years, is burning a ton of cash, and sitting on useless inventory, is worth something?

This is a stock that is going to $0, the last stretch might take a little while, but it’ll end up at $0.

    • Except, to put it mildly, they’re fucked.

  • What the hell kind of dog is that?

  • i’ve try using Babah Production. its suck :p

  • I think Palm just doesn’t have the resources to deal with another less-than-perfect launch, what with WinMo7, Android and iPhone OS 4.0 grabbing so much mindshare. I want them to succeed, but I think someone bigger is gonna gobble up all that innovation.

  • If you can’t swim then don’t jump into the pool. Also, don’t blame the other pool inhabitants for your inability to swim.

  • thats a good way to put it. BAM!

  • Time to buy a shit load of cheap Palm stocks before Google buys the company.

  • I think Samsung should buy Palm

  • Samsung should buy Google Android. Its “smart”, always have good ideas coming out.

  • Over-price your hardware, hype it to the point where there can be nothing but disappointment when it eventually comes out, then lock it up by tying it to a provider’s ball-and-chain contract – that’s how you become worth $0.

    Good riddance Palm.

    • Im pretty sure the device you are talking about is the Pre, (full disclosure, i rock one, on Sprint, too), but the business strategy you just ranted about perfectly describes the iPhone. Palm may be going under, but not for those reasons. Google is changing the game for everyone, and Palm kinda started last in line…

  • Windows Phone 8 Series = Webos

    • nope.

One interesting point people miss is the life of Windows Phone OS.
The recently announced Win Pho7 is CE based.

But that is the last one in line.

WinPho 8 is NT based….. So, someone going with Win Pho 7 is screwed……

  • Palm as a minor player in the smartphone market screwed up royally. Their major install base are business and medical professional… many of which are still using palmOS. Instead of alienating older platforms, they should have included palmOS sync, DocToGo, and Epocrates with all WebOS phones for free at LAUNCH! I do not fault them for launching with Sprint, but they lost serious mindshare by launching post Christmas-time on Verizon. Verizon launches phones every Holiday season. Apple launches every summer. These major events have framed the consumer market. I would have gone with a palm pre first but after comparing to Droid, WebOS is too laggy and offers, no voice search, and no free turn-by-turn GPS.

    • That’s odd. I use my turn by turn navigation all the time on my Pre. Came with the phone and everything.

Does being wrong about something so simple invalidate your entire post?

  • Palm would be fine with a new marketing campaign. I would be interested if they could create a wi-fi toting webOS phone without a required data plan aimed at teens. Networks would not like this but it could bring on some buzz.

  • Whether we like it or not, Apple and RIM have a set new levels of standard for what everyone has come to expect in a phone. RIM, more business use. Apple, more casual use. If you can’t come out with devices that meet and exceed what both of these offer, then you’re not going to cut it.

I was an iPhone 2G user, really got used to it, but hated the communistic control of the device by Apple…and hated iTunes even more. Jumped ship to Nokia, admittedly didn’t like it cause I got used to the iPhone. Went back to a 3GS, and waited until something on par came out so I can leave Apple again. What do you know, the Nexus One comes out…happy user ever since.

Moral of the story, you have to meet or beat the competition in order to survive and lure customers. All Palm did was advertise their phone as such, but it was way…way far from that.

  • So, are we all gunna buy shares now?

    • More like short selling if this stock analyst is correct.

It’s sad really. WebOS I feel does have potential to compete with the rest. Another reason I think that WebOS is dying is because Palm should have lisensed it out.

  • This is really a very sad ending from Palm. It used to be one of the best but now some analysts even lower the price to 0$.
